The Old Fire Station | Lamberhurst, Kent
Sensitive contemporary extension to a Listed dwelling.
This new two-storey extension to a listed converted fire station built in the historic grounds of Bayham Abbey provides extra space and more natural light. The contemporary addition is sympathetic to its historical context, respecting the scale, rhythm and materials of the original fire station and blending in with the brickwork and traditional details.
The timber framed construction is insulated with recycled newspaper, helping to retain heat and reduce energy costs. A south facing sun-space and roof-lights provide good natural daylight levels and maximises winter solar gain, giving a bright and airy environment and reducing the demand for artificial lighting.
