The National Best New Business Awards supports industrious, hardworking and enterprising small and medium enterprises nationally.

PassivPod directors Clive and Mark attended the awards ceremony in London on 29 June and were delighted to receive the coveted title of Construction Business of the Year.

But the accolades didn't end there. PassivPod also won the prestigious Overall Winner award, beating competition from all other industries – and 68 other new businesses – represented at the ceremony.

Commercial Director of PassivPod, Clive Bonny, said: “The construction industry needs much more focus on sustainability and environmental protection, and this national award supports our mission."

He added: “The award also ensures awareness of our offer to sell shares in our business to the public via crowdfunding, to encourage wider ownership of healthy zero carbon homes.”

The two awards will join PassivPod's ever-growing trophy cabinet alongside its recent Innovation in Sustainable Accommodation award from the 2017/2018 Corporate LiveWire Technology Awards.

PassivPod’s Technical Director (and Director of Koru Architects) Mark Pellant said: “We’re delighted to have won Construction Business of the Year and are especially proud to win such a highly competitive title as Overall Winner of the best new business nationally.

“Having worked as an architect specialising in sustainable design for the past two decades, it’s very encouraging to see the growing interest in sustainable construction and awareness of the problems associated with traditional construction practices.

“With three national awards under our belt in the last six months, we’re very positive about PassivPod’s continued success and excited for what the rest of 2018 brings.”

One of PassivPod's unique characteristics is its organic, ellipsoid form, reflecting natural shapes. Growing evidence shows spending time in nature has positive psychological and physiological effects and these effects can be recreated in indoor environments which are rich in nature and nature-inspired features. Known as ‘biophilic’ design, PassivPod encapsulates these principles while retaining a high-end design aesthetic.

The team will shortly be launching a crowdfunding campaign to fund the construction of a PassivPod showroom which will also be used as an educational tool to demonstrate eco design and a sustainable lifestyle. Details of how to invest are at www.passivpod.co.uk

PassivPod is a joint venture by Koru Architects and Strategic Management Partners centred on zero-carbon, pod-shaped, comfortable accommodation with an environmental conscience. PassivPod has several applications – as a luxury eco-lodge, a school classroom, garden office or as a home.

Beyond the primary goal of designing high-quality incarnations of the PassivPod design and executing their production, PassivPod feeds into its founders’ wider vision for a sustainable society. PassivPod's team understands that housing, leisure and education (among other sectors) need to drastically change course in order to provide a high quality of life within the planet’s limits.

The Sustainable Building Awards aim to reward the work done in the milieu of green building. From the pioneers to the rising stars; BUILD commends the people who work tirelessly to ensure the global community decreases its collective carbon footprint.

Catching society unaware, the buildings in which we work, live and play were, and in some cases still are, doing long-term damage to the environment. Since the days of the global energy crisis in the 1960s -70s, a movement to provide ecologically aware buildings with long term solutions has existed. Yet it has only been recently that major cities from across the world are passing laws and commissioning green buildings, as leaders realise the need for reduction in carbon footprints.

At Koru Architects we take pride in our sustainable practices, so we are particularly pleased to be recognised for our low energy designs and Green practice.

Koru Architects’ Zero-Carbon Home Wins Green Apple Award

Green Apple AwardWe are thrilled to be announced as a winner in the Green Apple Built Environment Awards 2016, an international campaign to find the greenest companies, councils and communities. We competed with well over 100 other nominees from different countries, and will be presented with a trophy and certificate at a "glittering ceremony" at super-sustainable venue The Crystal, in London on 8th August.

While we have been formally notified of our success in the architects' category, the awarding body The Green Organisation says we won't be told which of the Bronze, Silver or Gold awards we have won until the ceremony! No matter which specific award we have won, the whole team is immensely proud of our achievement and we are thrilled to receive such acclaim from a prestigious international competition.

The application involved writing a lengthy case-study on a finished project with proven environmental benefits. We decided to write about 15 Lloyd Close in Hove, a zero-carbon contemporary home and office that Koru Architects operates from, while also being our director's home. The home-office needs only half the average energy demand, and produces more renewable energy than it uses - exporting the surplus back to the grid. After entering the competition in February 2016, we decided to adapt our application text into a user-friendly PDF case-study report to be freely available online to anyone interested in our work. Click here to view the case-study.

The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the UK's major recognition of environmental endeavour among businesses, communities, local government and whole countries. The Green Apple Awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and several other independent bodies.

We are very excited to attend the ceremony in August and receive our award. We are also keen to meet the other winners and take the opportunity to network with environmentally-conscious entrepreneurs, sustainability professionals, community activists, civic officials and others from around the country and beyond. Here's to ever-growing interest in green design!
