Extension and internal remodel to add a studio to an artist’s home.

This single storey extension and internal alterations provides a new kitchen, dining and studio area for an artist-musician client.

The new studio space is flooded with natural daylight making it ideal for painting, and reducing energy use and the need for artificial lighting. The kitchen also benefits from roof-lights, making that area light and airy as well.

A curved ‘wall’ of storage cupboards extends along the party wall visually linking the living and work spaces together and leading the eye into the garden beyond. The studio has large glazed doors opening out onto a timber decking area leading into the garden. As well as providing a pleasant and effective work environment, the glazing also helps to maximise passive solar gain and reduce the demand for energy .
