Our Story

Koru Architects is an award-winning, design-led, Brighton based practice that has earned a reputation for thoughtful, environmentally-friendly design and a client-centred approach to projects.

In the mid-90s, Koru director Mark spent spent three years travelling overland through Africa, Asia and South America. This experience opened his eyes to global environmental devastation and climate change. He resolved to make a difference in both his personal and professional life: in March 2000 he established his own practice with the intention of designing sustainable, low-energy buildings which would reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of healthy, natural and sustainable materials.

Our design philosophy

Brighton, Koru ArchitectsWe promote design that is respectful of its context and that responds to the scale, rhythm and materials of the locality. Our design solutions have originality and integrity and are guided by the principles of environmental sustainability. Creative use of light and space, attention to detail and the careful selection of natural materials are all characteristics of our projects. Our approach to each design is unique yet our aims are the same: to create spaces that are delightful, comfortable and sustainable.

We put you at the centre of the design process

We always put the client at the centre of the design process, ensuring your needs and requirements are met and your vision is realised. The first stage of the project is all about listening to you and gathering the information we need to create a thoughtful personalised design that suits your lifestyle. We take great care to maintain open and honest communication throughout all stages of the project as we guide you through the complexities of planning, building control and selecting a contractor.

Our knowledge and experience will add value to your project

Our creative and holistic approach to a project coupled with our ability for problem solving and lateral thinking enables us to explore many more options than may at first be apparent. Whether it be gaining additional floorspace from the same footprint, improving the chances of securing planning approval through thoughtful, sensitive design or creating inspirational spaces to live and work in, we always strive to add value to your project.

Our architects bring their hands-on knowledge and experience to each and every project and invest time to explore all the options and possibilities. You will benefit from over thirty years of combined architectural experience, whether it be through increased property value or operational improvements for your business.

We can help you save money while helping to save the planet

With over a decade of experience designing and delivering low energy, sustainable buildings and an established network of specialist consultants and suppliers we are ideally placed to advise you how best to reduce the carbon footprint of your project and to reduce your energy and water costs too. We are passionate about environmental sustainability and as a demonstration of our commitment our director has built his own zero carbon home and studio.

Definition of sustainability

Sustainability can be defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, or put more simply ‘something is sustainable if you can keep on doing it for ever and ever’.

The meaning of koru

The koru is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement and change while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin and stillness. The koru symbol is rooted in the culture and art of New Zealand and can be translated as the Māori for “loop” signifying the infinite cycle of environmental sustainability.

How does this relate to our vision for architecture and design?

As nature strives for perfection, so we too strive for perfection in our designs and, through a process of evolution, we aim to close the loop between design and building performance to deliver well designed, comfortable and environmentally sustainable solutions.

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus observed that ‘change is the only constant’ and this is evident in both the natural world and the built environment. We at Koru Architects embrace change and ensure it is both positive and centred around the client’s needs and aspirations.
